Yeongsanjae (영산재) is an ancient Korean Buddhist ritual that has been performed since the early Joseon Period (1392-1910). In 2009, it was inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Yeongsanje is not just a ceremony for those who have passed away; it is also a symbolic reenactment of the Buddha’s historical delivery of the Lotus Sutra(법화경, 法華經) on Vulture Peak, Yeongchwisan (영취산, 靈鷲山) some 2,600 years ago. It is Buddhism’s most magnificent and impressive ritual passed down through the ages. Majid (Pakistan) and Horea (Canada) visited Bongwonsa (봉원사) temple to observe this Buddhist ceremony and they were impressed by all the elements of the ritual: the monks chanting, singing, dancing, and praying for all souls to achieve enlightenment. After the ceremony, our cast members attended a private class with Venerable Wonheo Choi, President of the Yeongsanjae Preservation Association. Together, they learned two of the traditional dances and gained a deeper understanding about Korean Buddhism.
